The city is a candidate for the nomination of the European Capital of Culture in 2016 - because of the rich historical heritage (modernism, Middle Ages, Prehistory of Roman times), and relationships with artists and men of letters such as Miró, Gaudí, Pau Casals, Balzac, Tirso de Molina and Maria Aurelia Capmany. Typed on UNESCO World List in 2000.
